The Second Flash

Text size

A man clutches an indigo jar as a child’s yard scene with a tire-swing appears around him.

Julian took the indigo jar with him because he wanted to keep it safe. After that, he opened it again, or at least handled it so the memory could reach him once more. A second flash hit him without warning.

In that flash, a raspy voice sang the lullaby and called him by another name. He also saw Nina, the woman from the memory, and he understood at once that she had been one of the people who protected him when he was a child.

The memory then showed that Julian and his family had hidden in the city during a time of danger. He saw the cracked tire swing in the yard where he had lived as a small child, and the place made sense in a way it never had before. The city was part of his real past, even though he had never known it.

Julian finally understood that the life he lived now had hidden his earlier life. He decided that he had to talk to Nina, or at least find proof from her, and he left at once before the stranger could take the jar.
