Tom Reed was driving the car ahead of the ambulance. When he heard the siren behind him, he still did not move aside. Then traffic slowed, and that gave Maya a narrow chance to get past. She tried to steer the ambulance around his car as soon as she could.
Tom waved for Maya to stop and argued through the window. He said he thought the ambulance was only using the siren to get through traffic faster. Maya did not stop to fight about it. As soon as there was enough room to pass safely, she kept going.
The delay cost the ambulance several important minutes. Even so, Eli stayed calm and kept getting ready for the patient. Maya kept her focus on the emergency ahead instead of letting the argument grow worse.
