On Friday morning, Daniel carried the copied letters and ledger pages to Harold Wynn’s management office. Ellis went with him, and Daniel could see that he was worried, but he still came along.
Daniel laid the copies in front of Harold and said, “The basement room is real.” Harold barely looked at them. “That is old junk,” he said. “It means nothing.”
Daniel kept his voice steady. “I already emailed these copies to the city housing inspector.” Harold’s face changed at once. He understood that Daniel had moved first and could not stop it now.
Harold lunged for the folder in Daniel’s hands, but Ellis stepped in front of him. He held Harold back and kept him from taking the papers.
Soon after Daniel’s report, the housing inspector arrived with a police officer. Daniel handed them the copied evidence and showed them the way down to the basement room.
The inspector and the police officer searched the hidden room. They found more files, cash records, and extra forged leases tucked away inside.
The papers showed illegal rent increases and eviction plans against long-term tenants. Harold’s fraud was no longer a rumor. His pattern was clear.
Harold broke and admitted, “I used that room to hide the records.” He said he kept the scheme secret so he could force tenants out.
Harold gave in a little more and admitted that Lena left because she was afraid he would take Daniel away if she talked. He still could not explain the photo of Lena with baby Daniel.
The police took Harold’s files and opened a criminal investigation. After that, the building’s cleanup plan was stopped.
Ellis gave Daniel one last sealed letter from Lena. Inside was her current address.
Daniel went to the address and found Lena alive, now under a new name. She told him she had stayed away so Harold could not use her to find Daniel.
Lena told Daniel that Ellis was his grandfather. She said Ellis had protected both of them from the day she disappeared.
Lena explained that Ellis had used the note to bring Daniel to this room before Friday. She said the key and the warning were meant to save the evidence, not frighten him.
Daniel understood at last that Ellis had not been playing a prank. His strange behavior came from fear and recognition. He also finally understood why Lena had vanished years ago.
Daniel left with Lena and Ellis, reunited now as family. He kept the brass key as proof that Apartment 7 was a hidden room, a buried truth, and the way back to his mother.
