Chapter 3 of 5

A Very Bad Tuesday

Aa

Text size

Books are scattered across a bookstore floor beside a collapsed shelf while one person kneels to pick them up and the owner stands behind the counter.

Emma got ready for what she expected to be a busy Tuesday. She hoped more customers would come in and help lift the shop’s poor sales. Instead, one problem started after another.

A supplier brought the wrong books, so Emma ended up with stock she had not ordered. At the same time, a shelf gave way because it had not been secured properly. She had to stop serving customers and clean up the mess.

Then Doris Bell came back and asked for another wrong book title, which only made things more confusing. Mr. Harris arrived while Emma was already tense and began talking as if nothing was wrong. Emma tried to stay polite, even though the shop felt completely out of control.

Noah came in and saw the disorder right away. He helped Emma gather the books and put the fallen shelf back in order. His help showed her that the town would support her if she let them.

Once the worst of the mess was over, Emma laughed at how absurd the day had been. She admitted that she could not run the store alone in the exact way she had imagined. That made her start thinking about hosting an event instead of just waiting for customers to show up.

Emma decided to start a book club at the bookstore. She wanted it to bring people together and give the shop a reason for people to visit. By the end of the chapter, she felt nervous, but also hopeful about the plan.
