Kira, Seren, and the dragon reached the volcanic hearth at last. This was the place where the blue fire could be lit again. As soon as they arrived, they saw clear signs that someone else was already inside.
A huge monster had made its nest in the forge heat and near the lava. It was guarding the place where the fire had to be renewed. Compared with the threats they had faced before, this final enemy was far larger and far more dangerous.
Kira saw that the lantern's remaining fire had to be used now, or the mission would fail. She decided to risk the last strength it held. While she made that choice, the others prepared for the last fight.
Seren fought hard to make an opening against the monster. The dragon used its knowledge of the ground and the heat to help push the creature into a corner. With that space made, Kira moved to the place where the blue fire could be restored.
Kira used the last of the lantern fire in the battle and to ignite the hearth. The fire struck home, and the monster was defeated or driven away. Then the blue fire was rekindled at the volcanic hearth.
The restored fire brought back the source of the city's defense. Kira had succeeded, but the lantern had done all it could and was finished now. When they looked for the way home, they found that it was blocked or destroyed, so they could not simply go back by the same road.
