Chapter 2 of 5

Small Changes

Text size

A man compares handwritten notes beside an old radio at a small table in a dim apartment.

Oliver used one message to avoid a problem the next day. After the warning, he changed one small choice in time, and that simple change helped him. It also made him feel more confident.

He used another message for a practical gain. It gave him a small edge at work and in daily life. After that, he began to think the radio could guide his whole life.

Then Oliver noticed that a new message was different from an earlier one. The change came after he had altered something the radio had predicted. He understood that the messages could react to what he did.

That worried him, because his interference no longer seemed safe. He tested the pattern again by making another small change. The next broadcast changed too, and that proved the future was shifting.

Oliver saw that his choices were affecting the messages. He could not depend on every prediction staying the same. Instead of comfort, that truth left him tense.

He kept a written log of the broadcasts and what happened after them. By comparing the original predictions with the new ones, he saw that the radio might be tied to a future that moved rather than one that was fixed.

Soon Oliver began to suspect that someone in the future was watching his decisions. He wondered whether the voice was trying to help him or control him. He waited for the next message carefully.

The chapter ended with a warning-like broadcast. The voice told him that he would meet someone tomorrow, and it said he must not trust her.
